Multi-million Pound Expansion!

PD Ports/AST's Multi-million-pound Warehouse Expansion!

PD Ports has announced a multi-million-pound investment at Groveport in partnership with one of Europe’s fastest growing international steel traders and long-standing customer, All Steels Trading.

This new long-term contract represents the largest single investment in the last decade at Groveport and signifies the next step in PD Ports’ growth strategy as the Port gears up for further expansion to support its growing reputation as the UK’s market leader for handling long steel products.

Construction on the new six-month build programme, which offers direct quay access, started in March and will see All Steels Trading’s footprint at Groveport expand from 166,000 sq. ft to over 300,000 sq. ft.

Once operational, PD Ports’ skilled and experienced team will handle, store and prepare the steel trader’s products ensuring they are available on demand; bolstering All Steels Trading’s customer commitment to short delivery lead-times and value for money.

Laurence McDougall, All Steels Trading Managing Director believes the partnership with PD Ports works because of the unique working relationship.

“PD Ports understands what we need to keep our customers on track, it’s an invaluable partnership. Having the ability to centralise all of our operations at Groveport enables us to deliver an unrivalled service for our customers, reaffirming our market position as the number one choice for long steel products in the UK.

“There is no other port in the UK that can offer the unique combination of capacity, infrastructure and exceptional service levels that we require. This new facility will streamline our entire business model.

“We often have to respond quickly to fluctuations in demand and knowing we can rely on PD Ports to handle, store and have our steel products available on demand adds real strength to our customer offer in terms of efficiency and value for money.”

Geoff Lippitt, PD Ports’ Group Business Development Director, sees this new contract as a further testament to the Company’s steel handling expertise and highly regarded reputation for deliverable logistics services.

“We are incredibly proud to have further strengthened our long-standing relationship with All Steels Trading as UK port of choice beyond 2035.

“The length of the contract with All Steels Trading shows a true partnership and demonstrates the trust and confidence the Company has in our market knowledge and our ability to understand as well as respond to their needs.

“Our skills and experience complemented by our central UK location for transport distribution to key UK steel processing sites and backed by a dedicated haulage fleet has positioned Groveport as the UK’s market leader for handling long steel products.

“We have seen transformational change in the global steel industry in recent years which has brought challenges but also real opportunity for some of our customers and we are continuing to invest and support that customer growth.”

It’s fair to say that the official opening of All Steels Trading’s new sales office in Thirsk was a huge, fabulous and resounding success for all involved! It was fantastic to see so many familiar faces on the night, who have historically and who continue to happily play key supporting roles in AST’s business success and sustainability story. AST’s invited VIP business partners certainly helped to lend the celebrations an air of grandeur and glamour!

At the start of the evening Laurence McDougall (AST’s Managing Director) spoke with pride and joy about the intriguing journey that has brought AST to this momentous point. The opening night of celebration also provided a wonderful opportunity to publicly thank AST colleagues for their highly valued steadfast commitment, great team camaraderie, shared passion and insightful vision for the AST business. Without further ado the wide blue silk ribbon was adeptly cut by David Bamford (AST’s new office build architect) and the sound of champagne corks popping resounded in AST’s new state of the art Thirsk office building. We had certainly never envisaged previously just how easily AST's new Thirsk office reception foyer could be so magically transformed into a lively champagne/cocktail bar! Our party guests were also treated to some delicious cold and hot food beautifully prepared and served by staff from The Cleveland Tontine restaurant. Spotlight on AST’s New Dedicated Portside Facility

All Steels Trading is delighted to announce that virtually all of our extensive steel stock is now stored in its own new dedicated portside warehouse at Groveport Logistics, Scunthorpe.

The Groveport site itself covers 190 acres with 12 berths and within this complex All Steels Trading now occupies 170,000 sq. feet of dedicated warehousing – all of which is serviced with ultra-modern remote control cranes to maximise inside storage capacity. From the 12 berth facility at Groveport each vessel can be swiftly discharged at the rate of circa 1,000 tonnes per day and the goods can be immediately transferred to our portside warehousing.  Inside All Steels Trading's dedicated warehouse material is strategically laid out and whilst retaining original mill labels all of our steel is colour coded by steel grade as an added measure for quality recognition and traceability purposes. So why buy rusty beams and columns from others when you can buy new, blue looking steel from All Steels Trading?!

Did you know that our stock offering also includes a large mix of high yield steels incorporating materials with good low temperature impact properties for offshore type applications? Material with shipbuilding certification also forms

part of our stock range and additionally we also offer steel products of a more specialised nature, which includes material, manufactured by our own sister companies.

AST’s Sister Company Enhances its Global Audience!

We would like to congratulate The Steel Ball Company on the launch of their new dynamic multilingual website, which can be seen at the following address: steelballcompany.co.uk.

The new website is available to view in Chinese, English, French, German & Spanish. The Steel Ball Company may well be over 90 years old but its forward thinking Directors appreciate that for businesses wishing to get that competitive advantage, a multilingual website now presents one of the most high impact means of expanding a customer base and securing greater export sales volumes.

The majority of the translation work for the new website was carried out by Lingo24. In 2010 Lingo24 won the HSBC Business Thinking award for Scotland & Northern Ireland the same year that All Steels Trading won the award for the North East of England. So it’s pleasing to report that a chance meeting at the 2010 HSBC final in Hong Kong of two Directors from two very different business genres prompted the start of a mutually beneficial & harmonious business relationship.

Here at AST we have every confidence that The Steel Ball Company's new multilingual website will also attract a large regular global audience and be the envy of its competitors worldwide!
